The energy problem nobody wants to talk about

The International Energy Agency chimed in with a sobering projection: AI-driven servers are expected to grow 30% annually, and data centers already consume roughly 1.5% of global electricity. Space-based data centers are no longer science fiction - they're now a serious line item in board-level infrastructure discussions.

Europe, for its part, is done waiting. Mistral's push isn't just about building a better model - it's about building European AI sovereignty from the compute layer up, targeting 200 megawatts of capacity across Sweden and France by 2027.

What this means for businesses

AI costs are not going to zero anytime soon, despite the noise about cheap inference. Energy constraints are real, and the companies that own the infrastructure will set the price floor. If you're building an AI-dependent product, your unit economics depend on who controls the stack beneath you. Choose your providers carefully.
